SUSHISAMBA rio’s Omakase Series

SUSHISAMBA rio’s Omakase Series

Omakase-86*After this story went to press, “24/7” was notified by SUSHISAMBA rio that it would be closing for ten days for structural repairs, beginning immediately. Its “Omakase Series”, on January 18 and January 25, will be rescheduled. The restaurant is accepting reservations for February 1 and 8.

We have to admit, the Japanese have some very interesting, albeit pause-worthy, dining customs: slurping noodles or hot food loudly in public is completely acceptable; chopsticks should never be stuck upright into a bowl of rice (this is only done during funerals and is considered a bad omen); and diners are discouraged from tipping or offering tokens of gratuity, it’s considered rude (no joke!).

Omakase-98Skip the lesson in eastern dining etiquette and head over to SUSHISAMBA rio for its Omakase Series instead. Inspired by a trip to the “Land of the Rising Sun”, Executive Sushi Chef Shigeru Kitano treats guests to a regionally-inspired, eight-course menu that changes weekly (regions featured include Chūgoku, Akita, Nagano, and Niigata respectively). Sake pairings and dessert are included and each meal finishes with a traditional tea service.

Omakase-76Cost is $125 per person (excludes tax & gratuity) and seating is limited to 20 guests. For more information or to book reservations, call 312-595-2300. The Omakase Series kicks off on Friday, January 18th and is hosted each Friday for four consecutive weeks.

Thoughtful tip to Westerners: While it may be customary in Japan to wait until everyone’s glass has been filled before taking a sip, fret not. Japan is legendary for producing ne plus ultra sake so it is well worth the wait. Kampi!
